The PSM (Pistolet Samozaryadny Malogabaritny — "compact self-loading pistol") is a unique Soviet pistol developed by a team of designers at the Tula Central Design and Research Bureau of Sporting and Hunting Weapons (T. I. Lashnev, A. A. Simarin, and L. L. Kulikov) . It was created specifically for the senior command staff of the Soviet Army, KGB operational groups, and MVD personnel . The main requirements were minimal dimensions and weight with no protruding parts .
Key Features:
-
Ultra-compact Size: At just 155mm long and 18mm wide, the PSM is one of the thinnest combat pistols ever made . It easily fits in a pocket and is ideal for deep concealment.
-
Unique Cartridge: The pistol was designed around the proprietary 5.45×18mm MPTs cartridge . With a muzzle velocity of 315 m/s, it has excellent penetrating power — capable of piercing light body armor and engaging targets behind cover .
-
Reliability: The action operates on a simple straight blowback principle, making the design highly reliable and easy to maintain .
-
Safety: The slide-mounted manual safety blocks the hammer, trigger, and slide, allowing safe carry with a round in the chamber .
The PSM has seen use in various conflicts and remains in service with special forces and law enforcement agencies in the post-Soviet space . It has also become a popular award weapon .
